Each Gua or square is associated with particular aspects of you and your life, and each one has a dominant color (plus other colors not shown here) and a shape.
To activate a Gua means to place an object there that represents that area of life to you with a corresponding color, shape or other features (i.e., mirrors can represent water).
In placing an object like art in a particular Gua, you can visualize your intention when you do this and it will energize that object.
